	Abstract:	The Urban League of Cleveland was organized in 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Negro Welfare Association of Cleveland. It joined the National Urban League in 1930 and changed its name to the Urban League of Cleveland in 1940. Its purpose is interracial planning to help the community devise solutions to social and economic problems. The collection consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, financial and membership records, and files of Director Ernest Cooper and Deputy-Director Anita Polk.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Program for Sexual Learning was an extension program of the Program for Human Sexual Development at Harvard University. It was organized in the mid-1970s to develop a program to aid parents to discuss sexuality with their children, to produce a movie which would show parents how to discuss sexuality frankly with their children, and to start a community telephone service to answer questions about sexuality. The collection consists of pre-incorporation records, working files, correspondence, scholarly articles on sexuality, interview transcripts, and materials relating to the organization's research studies.

	Abstract:	The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation is an education foundation promoting elementary and secondary teaching, teacher training, curriculum development and school evaluation studies, including educational TV programs and in-service conferences and seminars. The collection is of interest to researchers exploring trends and developments in education in Ohio, 1963-1992. The records document the foundation's activities in teacher training and staff development, curriculum development, materials development and equipment purchase, information sharing, conferences and retreats, enrichment programs, scholarship and awards, and evaluation and research. The material also supports research into foundation management. The collection consists primarily of grant and program files, but also include minutes and publications. The grant files include award letters, grant proposals, proposal reviews, correspondence, project reports, photographs, and project evaluations. Program files consist of correspondence, meeting materials, and program descriptions.

	Abstract:	Emily Newell Blair was a suffragist, feminist, Democratic Party official, mother and writer. During World War I she worked in the press department of the Missouri Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense, eventually becoming vice chair. Representing Missouri on the Democratic National Committee, Blair was chosen national vice chair responsible for organizing women voters and women's activities, and eventually rose to first vice president, organized 2,000 plus Democratic women's clubs, and helped found the Woman's National Democratic Club. In 1935, she was appointed to the Consumers' Advisory Board of the National Recovery Administration, and, in 1942, was appointed chief of the Women's Interest Section of the War Department's Public Relations Bureau. Her husband, Harry Wallace Blair, was U.S. Assistant Attorney General in the Land Div. of the Justice Dept. in the 1930s and later served with the President's Loyalty Review Board. The collection consists of personal, professional and family correspondence, published and unpublished writings by and about Emily Blair, diaries, speeches, personal and family memorabilia, and clippings. Series I and II form the bulk of the collection, Series II being largely Emily Blair's personal writings, such as diaries, speeches, published articles, typescripts of fiction and non-fiction, and typescripts of her autobiography. Blair family material consists of the papers of Harry Wallace Blair (husband), Harriet Blair Forsythe (daughter), James Patton and Anna Gray Newell (parents), and her McDowell family ancestors of Pennsylvania, particularly the correspondence of Alexander McDowell. The collection is useful for researching the history of women and the family in the early 20th century, the issues of feminism and women's suffrage, and the emergence of women as politicians within the Democratic Party. Notable correspondents include Cordell Hull, Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. McDowell family materials chronicle pioneer life on the 18th-century Pennsylvania frontier.

65	Title:	Records of the Mayor of the City of Cleveland, George V. Voinovich

	Abstract:	George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of the mayor's office files transferred in 1989 to the Western Reserve Historical Society as an agent of the Ohio State Archives under the Ohio Public Records Law. These include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes and agendas, publications, speeches, invitations, regrets, press releases, photographs, and videotapes, with newspaper clippings comprising more than half the volume of the collection.

	Abstract:	The Greater Cleveland Growth Association was founded in 1848 as the Board of Trade in Cleveland, Ohio. It was reorganized and renamed the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce in 1893. It merged with the Greater Cleveland Growth Board in 1968 to form the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. Its goals have always been to provide a forum for business leaders to discuss ideas and problems, to stimulate investments in the local economy, and to make Cleveland a better place to live and work. The organization was active in many areas of progressive reform in the early 1900s, including housing codes, bath houses, and the organization of charitable activities. The collection consists of charters of the Board of Trade, minutes and annual reports of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, files of the Transportation and Industrial Relations departments, records of legislative and other committees, general office files, membership records, newspaper clippings and photographs.

	Abstract:	The Eva L. and Joseph M. Bruening Foundation was established in 1987 in Cleveland, Ohio, through the estate donations of Joseph M. Bruening and his wife Eva L. Bruening. It is an independent foundation which provides grants to agencies in the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. The foundation's focus areas are education and social services, with an emphasis on care for the elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged. Proposals funded include those in the fields of early childhood education, primary and secondary education, higher education, domestic violence and child abuse prevention, human services, and children and youth services. Special consideration is given to Roman Catholic organizations and institutions that provide these types of programs and services. Joseph M. Bruening founded the Ohio Ball Bearing Company in Cleveland in 1923, later known as Bearings Inc. The collection consists of applications, budgets, correspondence, grant proposals (including: audit reports, budgets, correspondence, fact sheets, financial statements, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, reports, rosters, summaries, and testimonial letters), invoices, memoranda, photographs, reports, rosters, and workshop packets.

	Abstract:	The Nordson Foundation (1952-1988) was originally created by Walter G. and Virginia Nord. Walter Nord was the president of U. S. Automatic Corporation (f. 1909) of Amherst, Ohio, a company which manufactured screw machine parts for the automotive industry. Walter Nord and his sons, Evan and Eric Nord, organized the Nordson Corporation in 1954 as a subsidiary of U. S. Automatic Corporation. The Nordson Corporation, headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, is a multinational company that designs, manufactures, and markets systems that apply adhesives, sealants, and coatings to a broad range of consumer and industrial products during the manufacturing process. The Nordson Foundation was a philanthropic organization which provided financial support primarily in the areas of public service, social problems, family services, and education. The Nord family, including Walter's sons Eric and Evan Nord, and Cleveland lawyer William Ginn, guided the foundation through 1980. In 1988 the foundation was reorganized to create the Nord Family Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation. Since its inception, the Nord Family Foundation has primarily served Lorain County, Ohio, and has been based in the Lorain-Elyria area. As of 1993, the foundation was headquartered in Elyria, Ohio. Its charitable activities, however, have sometimes reached into neighboring locales, particularly Cuyahoga County and Cleveland, and touched other areas of Ohio and the nation. In addition to the foundation, the Nord family is also noted for its involvement in the development of inventions, including innovations in areas as diverse as spray painters and robotics. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes of the board of trustees, policies and procedures, a mission statement, resolutions, correspondence, financial reports, contract bids and specifications, newspaper clippings, memoranda, pamphlets, publications, accounting journals, budgets, tax returns, affidavits, and materials related to projects and activities of the foundation, with grant proposals (1980-1984) compromising the bulk of the materials. The files include the minutes, cases, photographs, and organizational materials of the Neighborhood Concepts Company (1984-1986), a Lorain-Elyria housing rehabilitation program initiated through the funding of the Nordson Foundation. The records of the Nord Family Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation are not part of this collection.

The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Anthony J. Celebrezze, his family and friends, and governmental officials; candid and formal pictures of official functions in Cleveland and Washington, D.C.; and views of Cleveland and other areas of the United States. Included are portraits of John F Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert F. Kennedy, Thomas P. O'Neill, John W. McCormack, Michael P. Feighan, and Charles A. Vanik.

	Abstract:	The Hough Area Development Corporation (f. 1967) was formed in Cleveland, Ohio, by DeForest Brown in conjunction with African American professionals and neighborhood leaders in the wake of the Hough riots by DeForest Brown to aid in bringing economic prosperity to Cleveland's Hough neighborhood. Dedicated to African American self-determination, the group initially met in secret in order to prevent competition for dollars and outside attempts to control it. The group promoted African American business entrepreneurship and better housing. The collection consists of board minutes, correspondence, clippings, legal papers, financial records, reports, and the working papers of the corporation's offices.

	Abstract:	George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of calendars, correspondence, itineraries, lists, magazines, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, press releases, reports, schedules, and speeches.

	Abstract:	Josephine Saxer Irwin (1890-1984) was a Cleveland, Ohio, area educator and political activist. Her major interests included women's rights and world peace. She served as a city councilman in Fairview Park, Ohio, from 1958-1962. She was a founding member of Womenspace. Each year, the National Organization for Women and Womenspace confers the Josephine Irwin Award to women contributing to women's rights. The collection consists of photographs depicting Irwin and others at various events, including the Fairview Park Senior Citizens Club Christmas party (1964), the Rocky River Research Club Colonial party (1932), and the Tokyo Women's Club Tea (1966). Includes individual and group portraits.
